Accidentally Vegan: Cheese n’ Crackers

Vegan Cheese n' Crackers

Vegan Cheese n’ Crackers

Just a quick post here… I’m a little bit behind, a little bit stressed, and a little bit unprepared. So… basically, it’s Monday.

This past Friday I had a dentist appointment, where my jaw was stretched into unnatural contortions while 4 human hands were simultaneously scrammed into my mouth. Eight (EIGHT!) shots of Novocaine later I went home with a temporary crown, some dried tears on my cheeks, and an absolute certainty that I deserved some serious cocktail hour gin!

Being the brilliant gal that I am, I went grocery shopping for the week before the appointment, and had stumbled upon some Daiya wedges that were approaching their sell-by date, and were marked down to $1.99 (from $4.49!). Obviously I bought them all.  Around 4 o’clock the Novocaine and stroke-like sagging face had started to wear off, and I knew it was time for drinks (now that I could finally  drink without using a straw). I kept thinking about all that Daiya in the fridge and decided that some good old fashioned Cheese n’ Crackers would really hit the spot. I called Jason, who was on his way home from work, and asked him to stop and grab some crackers.

He came through the door 20 minutes later holding a box of Ritz crackers, and I was immediately disappointed. “Those aren’t veeeegaaaaannnn!” I wailed.  He just stared at me. Pretty typical, actually… Anyway, a quick perusal of the ingredients list and a a google search later, I knew that they were, in fact, veeegaaaannn, and promptly got to stuffing my face with them.

Chewing on the other side of my mouth, of course.

Lesson learned: Don’t start whining until you check PETA’s Accidentally Vegan list. Also? Those Ritz crackers are good! And don’t even get me started on those Daiya wedges… RIDICULOUS!

Haha! I’ve been caught whining unnecessarily. Not very becoming is it ;-)? Hope you are recovering from the dental invasion!

    • Barb June 18, 2012, 12:20 pm

Well, I already (accidentally) tore out my temporary crown, so I’m not sure you could call what I’m doing “recovering”…

I usually don’t eat refined foods, but I found out that heads and tails oreos (vanilla cookie on one side, chocolate on the other) are vegan over the weekend and because I ran 19 miles, I ate some 🙂 I didn’t know ritz crackers were vegan! Awesome!

    • Barb June 18, 2012, 12:21 pm

I haven’t had oreos in years, since before I went vegan. I should go get some…

      • Somer June 18, 2012, 12:26 pm

Do it. They were DOUBLE STUF. Radical!

  • Trobairitz June 18, 2012, 10:35 am

Yumm! I am so waiting until I can find Daiya wedges in our stores here in Oregon.

I like that Nutter Butter cookies are accidentally vegan, but I try to eat healthy so I haven’t eaten them in a few years.

    • Barb June 19, 2012, 6:21 am

I hope you get them soon, they’re really great!!

The fact that Ritz crackers are accidentally vegan has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Other faves: Oreos, Airhead taffy, Skittles (!!!!), Sour Patch Kids, and Nutter Butters.

    • Barb June 18, 2012, 12:21 pm

      Nutter Butters!? Really!??

  • halftohalf June 18, 2012, 12:26 pm

Ritz is mine! And Wheat Thins! Maybe not the healthiest choices, but there you have it.

    Hope you are feeling better!

    • Barb June 19, 2012, 6:22 am

I am, although I have to go back tonight and have my temporary crown re-glued… but it’s my own fault 🙂 And it’s okay to eat “junk food” once in a while!

  • sarah@thesweetlife June 18, 2012, 12:26 pm

that cheese looks good! i’ve seen it, but haven’t tried it yet. Oh and Nutter Butters are my gas station food of choice!

    • Barb June 19, 2012, 6:23 am

You really should try it! And I can’t believe I didn’t know about Nutter Butters!

OMG….Barb…..I had no idea of the PETA accidently vegan list. Thank you so much for that info!!! Hope your mouth is better. Dental procedures gone amuck aren’t fun!!!

    • Barb June 19, 2012, 6:23 am

Ritz crackers are vegan??! This is life changing, people!

    • Barb June 21, 2012, 9:54 am

      I know, right!?

  • Heather June 21, 2012, 6:59 am

Ritz and Oreos are totally my favorite accidental vegan items – Justin was all “those aren’t vegan” too and I told him PETA said so and continued to stuff my face and he followed suite 😉

Score on the Daiya!!! I would have bought them out too 🙂

    • Barb June 21, 2012, 9:55 am

Hey man, if PETA says we can eat them, we’re gonna eat them! HA!

  • Susan N. Pearl June 27, 2012, 8:49 am

Thanks I knew thanks to you that Oreo’s are vegan but not Ritz (now I AM filled with joy). What are nutter butters? I AM Canadian and my boyfriend is American maybe he can pick some up for me.
