There’s something that’s both comforting and exciting about sitting down with a new cookbook and marking off the recipes you can’t wait to try, and imagining how delicious the food will be. The point I’m getting at is that as soon as my copy of Jazzy Vegetarian Classics: Vegan Twists on American Family Favorites arrived, I tore it open and immediately got to reading!  This book is full of beautiful food porn that will leave you drooling, I promise!

Black Forest Pecan Pie with Vanilla Creme

Black Forest Pecan Pie Makes 8 servings

To finish any festive meal with a flourish, I take a cue from my mother, who always offered a homemade pecan pie as the finale for our holiday gettogethers. Now I have carried on that tradition with an innovative and tasty vegan version of this gooey, sweet treat that features a flourless crust. I must admit, I think this is the most decadent dessert I have ever created!

Ingredients:

CRUST

10 pitted Medjool dates

¾ cup rolled oats

¼ cup raw unsweetened shredded dried coconut

¼ cup pecan halves

FILLING

½ cup maple syrup

¼ cup unsulphured blackstrap molasses

1 cup vegan chocolate chips

5 pitted Medjool dates

2 tablespoons vegan margarine

2 tablespoons filtered or spring water

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1½ cups pecan halves

TOPPING

15 pecan halves

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Put the dates, oats, coconut, and pecans in a high-performance blending appliance, and process to the consistency of soft dough. Transfer the dough onto a board and form it into a ball. Flatten the dough slightly with your hands and then use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a 10- inch round. Invert the dough on to an ungreased 9-inch pie plate. Press the dough mixture evenly over the bottom of the plate, pushing it up the sides of the pie plate as you go, to make a crust. To craft a pretty edge to the crust, use your index finger to push the inner edge of the crust out, while pinching the outer edge in with the thumb and index finger of your other hand to make a classic scallop edge around the pie crust.

Put the maple syrup, molasses, vegan chocolate chips, pitted dates, vegan margarine, water, and vanilla extract in a blender and process until very smooth. Pour the maple mixture in a medium bowl. Fold in 1½ cups whole pecans. Pour the filling into the crust and smooth the top using a rubber spatula. Gently press 15 whole pecans into the top of the pie, arranging them in a pleasing manner. Put the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the edges start to set and brown. Tent the pie with foil and bake for 5 to 8 minutes more, or until the pie has almost set in the middle. The filling will still be somewhat soft.

Carefully put the pie on a wire rack (the filling will be very hot!) and let cool for 1 hour. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours. Serve chilled. Cover and store leftover pie in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

I like a recipe printed book I can peruse and enjoy! I can take it into the kitchen, mark notes on it, and see the stains which indicate that I have enjoyed making it!

    • Debbie Brooks Riffel February 5, 2014, 9:34 am

Sorry it took a bit to respond, I had to change shirts, I drooled a little when I saw this recipe Barb! I like a printed recipe book I can peruse and enjoy! I won’t be impressed with digital cookbooks until I can download a meal! 🙂 I like the smell of the printed pages, the thought that others are enjoying it too. I love that I can take it into the kitchen turning pages as I go, checking if I have the ingredients on hand to try that one and imagining the ummmm’s I will hear as it is eaten (if I can hear them over my own!). I love that I can mark notes in it (ie: who likes it, who I will love hearing say “THIS is VEGAN?!”), I love to see the fingerprints on the pages where I checked what I was doing, which indicate that I have enjoyed making it! I “read” cookbooks, you know you can “taste” the recipes before you make them. 🙂 Between my mom (who gave me my love of cookbooks and cooking) and myself, we have probably had literally over 1,000 cookbooks and have passed on to others almost as many to share the love! I am a vegan, newly Celiac so I apprecite The Jazzy Vegetarian! You cover so many ways to make dishes that people with allergies or autoimmune issues can have! A big hearty THANK YOU! I would love to win the cookbook, maybe even more that a new pair of stilettoes! Now THAT is saying something! Now that my children are grown and have children of their own, I love having them ask me for my “recipe” for their favorite childhood dishes. I will be “handing” down many more, hopefully from your work! (Don’t worry, you will get FULL credit!) Whether I win the cookbook or not, thank you and The Jazzy Vegetarian for all the work you put in to see that we eat healthy!

  • Michelle February 4, 2014, 8:56 am

I probably own 75-100 cookbooks with many more on my wish list. I love cookbooks and enjoy looking through them.

  • Carolina February 4, 2014, 9:14 am

Count me in as a crazy collector. I have approximately 70 vegan cookbooks. I just can’t stop.

  • Evelyn February 4, 2014, 9:17 am

I love cookbooks also! I recently moved into a small cabin in the Adirondack Mountains, so I had to get rid of many of my books. I had probably 25 cookbooks, but all of them were for meat eaters. I had one cookbook that was vegetarian that was written by Linda McCartney. I saved that one, and gave away all of the others. I have since, become vegan. I also have about 6 new cookbooks, plus an iPad with many vegan recipes. Since becoming vegan, I have also become healthier and a very good cook! I look forward to your recipes from this blog. Thank you.

  • Stacy February 4, 2014, 9:32 am

31 – I will admit that I have a slight addiction to buying them. Plus, I have thousands of recipes pinned and lots more cookbooks in my Amazon wishlist. I love to have different options though when I am cooking.

  • Stacy February 4, 2014, 9:41 am

I just looked through the free look on Amazon on this cookbook and love the menus with page numbers. I have troubles thinking of sides and desserts that would go great with main dishes.

  • glo February 4, 2014, 9:44 am

I have too many to count… A large 5 shelf bookcase is overflowing and the top two shelves of my secretary are full now as well. That doesn’t include the huge stacks I’ve printed from the web. I LOVE to cook. But I am always eager to add to my “collection” and this cookbook sounds like one I would certainly enjoy!

  • Sophie February 4, 2014, 10:11 am

Mmmmmmmm,….What a tasty fabulous dessert. It looks very appetizing too.

  • Tracy February 4, 2014, 10:17 am

I have at least 40 cookbooks! I also absolutely love opening and reading through a cookbook for the first time! Would love to win a copy of this one to add to my collection!!

  • Lisa February 4, 2014, 10:42 am

As pretty as ebooks are, I am ALL for the paper version! There’s something very nostalgic about a beautiful cookbook that you can share with your friends and family, with all your handwritten notes inside. I dont have a huge collection, but have a few dozen vegan ones 🙂

  • Alicia Metz February 4, 2014, 10:42 am

I have tons and tons of cookbooks. My entertainment center shelves are lined slap full of cookbooks and cooking magazines.

  • Terri Cole February 4, 2014, 10:48 am

I probably have somewhere between 50 to 60 cookbooks. Quite a few are vegetarian but only 7 of them are vegan, I have been vegan less than 2 years. I have been watching The Jazzy Vegetarian on Create and enjoying her show. This looks like a great book, thanks for the chance to win!

  • Aimee B. February 4, 2014, 10:57 am

I have quite a few cookbooks, over 50 for sure. I love reading through them and picking out all the recipes I want to make for my family. Thank you for offering all of us the opportunity to win this fantastic cookbook! 🙂

  • Kristina February 4, 2014, 1:57 pm

I am a poor grad student, so I usually check out a cookbook from the public library 3-4 times before I finally just buy it. I own 16 cookbooks, 11 of which are vegan/plant-based. I have 7 more on my “want to buy” list, but it will probably be awhile before I get them.

  • Nancy February 4, 2014, 4:41 pm

I too have a cookbook addiction and probably have at least 80.

  • Sara February 4, 2014, 4:59 pm

I probably only have 5 or so. I prefer electronic recipes. It’s hard to find an entire cookbook that I think I’ll really use an enjoy.

  • sarah February 4, 2014, 5:22 pm

    I think I own 5

  • Karen February 4, 2014, 6:10 pm

There are about 20 that I use regularly, then there are the boxes of other cookbooks that I don’t use as often and are still too important to part with. About 150 total, I think.

  • S February 4, 2014, 7:26 pm

I seriously only have 1 vegan cookbook. That is why I would love this one! I make my own recipes and post them all the time on FB. I have about 10 originals that I change up every now and then. But I definitely need some new inspiration.

  • Melissa February 4, 2014, 8:07 pm

I don’t know the exact number, but I’m guessing I have somewhere around 150 cookbooks…

  • nicole February 4, 2014, 8:16 pm

I actually own 2 cookbooks one is vegan and one is not, but that is saying quite a lot for me because I own close to nothing, I love to cook as much as I love to travel but a great cookbook would go around the world with me!

  • Reia@TheCrueltyFreeReview February 4, 2014, 8:35 pm

I only have about 12 cookbooks, but I did have more until just recently when I took a bunch to give a away at work. They were all meat based/non-vegan ones that I never used anymore. I would have a lot more vegan books but space is just way too limited!

  • sonja February 4, 2014, 8:37 pm

I probably have around 15 to 20 vegan and vegetarian ones and a few non vegan with great ideas…and growing.. I just cant seem to help myself and then Salvation Army has their sale and I got a few non vegan ones with the thought of trying to veganize them and a big cookbook and recipe mess on the coffee table to prove it!

  • alienea February 4, 2014, 9:28 pm

I only have about 35. However, I have folders stuffed with clippings from magazines and printouts from the web. I love to mark the recipes I use and write comments about what worked and what didn’t, any changes I made, and whether or not the family liked it.

  • Robyn B | Modern Day Missus February 4, 2014, 10:31 pm

I am such a collector of cookbooks! I love to just sit and browse through recipes for inspiration on the weekend!

I didn’t know about this cookbook – I’ll have to check it out (I’m all the way over in Australia), and that pecan pie looks very cool.

    Robyn xx

  • Connie Fletcher February 5, 2014, 5:20 am

OMG!!! I didn’t know she had a new book out!! I, too, am a cookbook addict. I LOVE me a good vegan cookbook..

I would love to win this!!!!!

  • Kat Giuffre February 5, 2014, 7:46 am

I own approx 20 cookbooks. When I went vegan, I stocked up on how-to books. Lately I’ve been adding more baking and dessert vegan cookbooks to my collection. It’s so fun to fool meateaters–most of the time they can’t believe the food I make is vegan!

  • Annie February 5, 2014, 7:51 am

My name is Annie and I’m a cookbook junkie!! Shelves and shelves…I can never get enough :-)!

  • Laura February 5, 2014, 3:28 pm

I have 21. I find most of my recipes on the internet now, so I only buy them for special reasons, like if I find a vegetarian Indian cookbook.

Btw, just found your blog on a grilled cheese list. So happy, just subscribed!

  • Mel McP February 5, 2014, 4:05 pm

I have about 50 cookbooks, and more e-books but I always forget about those because I don’t see them in my kitchen when I go to cook!
PS–I love watching Laura Theodore’s PBS show!

  • Shannon February 5, 2014, 4:53 pm

    I have around 15-18 cookbooks…I’m only 22 so I’m just getting started 🙂

  • HilLesha February 6, 2014, 12:08 am

    I practically lost count! ~lol~ 🙂

  • Rachel Smith February 7, 2014, 9:08 am

I have a handful of favorite cookbooks, but mostly store my recipes in a recipe app on my Kindle.

  • Amanda February 7, 2014, 9:53 am

I am addicted to cookbooks! Way too many to count – but I keep getting more! Would love to add this one to my collection. 🙂

  • Cheri S February 8, 2014, 10:57 am

Wow! This the first time I’ve counted how many cookbooks I have. I currently have 54 plus 20 years of Gourmet Magazines from the 60!s and 70’s that I inherited from my mom! I tend to like books that tell stories as well as sharing recipes. Current fav author is Nigel Slater – excellent bedtime reading and tasty recipes. The funny thing is that most of my recent cooking has involved using online recipes and my iPad. It’s easy to wipe off and I can stick it right in the recipe book stand.

  • Caroline February 8, 2014, 1:35 pm

I own just 3 cookbooks because I’m super cheap – but I love, love, love the actual books. Most of my recipes come from online

  • Drew February 9, 2014, 9:33 am

I have 28; at least 20 of them are vegan. Between the cookbooks and all the great recipes on the web (viz. this site!), deciding what to cook can be a little overwhelming!

  • Susan February 9, 2014, 12:44 pm

I have 105 cookbooks, but only eight are vegan. Must collect more!

  • Manu February 9, 2014, 7:45 pm

Most of my cookbooks (not sure how many) are still in my old room at my parents’ house. So obviously they aren’t that great since I don’t use them very often. At my house, I only have two cookbooks, which I also don’t use often. I have a collection of magazines with recipes though and a gazillion print-outs from the internet, copies of recipes from friends’ cookbooks and even handwritten recipes. I would love to start a collection of vegan cookbooks. I definitely prefer an actual book or piece of paper to the electronic version.
